Analyzing the Arts: Going Beyond Text

Text can be more than the printed word. It can come in many different forms. In this session, two classroom teachers from Summit View Elementary, an integrated arts magnet school, will share how they use paintings, music, sculptures, and drama as a form of text in their curriculum instruction. Students interact with these art forms to infer, determine importance, create meaning, justify, analyze mood, make connections, compare and contrast, and think creatively. Using the arts as a text is a great strategy to engage all students as well as level the playing field for all learners. The presenters appreciate the arts for their beauty but also as an engaging vehicle to teach their students.
